Why Death is Your Truest Companion in a Chaos Storm
Magic School Lesson: Death Magic 101
Every Friday at 9:00 AM Eastern, we gather for Embodied Magic. We move and breathe, so that we can invoke and embody the qualities we need to step into our most powerful selves. Sometimes we even pull cards. The first card to appear before us in 2026 was the Death/Life card from Somnambulant Visuals.
Normally, any symbol associated with Death can ripple of apprehension for an individual or group. You can see the subtle tightening in the chest, the "skin-crawl" of a nervous system primed by a society that views somatic Death as a universal human hex that must be outrun, forestalled or denied. Most people are culturally trained to resist transitions; when Death looks them in the face, they lose their center and flee to numbness or control.
But not for me, nor my students. No. We avoid the abject boredom that results when one dedicates a life to mortality denial. Ugh...eye roll
To a Death Witch (and those who chill with one), that confrontation with the dark unknown is where some of the most potent magic can be found. I’ve looked Her (Death) in the face. To me She is another face of the Mother Goddess. She is also a sister, a mirror, and a bosom upon which to rest.
Witch Wisdom: There are endless ways to interact with Death. The only limitations are the ones in your imagination.
As a group we practice confronting that which terrifies us. That which gnaws at us and stalks us. We know that intelligently meeting those insecurities and moving towards ACCEPTANCE of them is the way to liberate ourselves from that weight. When you stop fighting the inevitable, you stop wasting your precious life force. You gain a clarity that most people trade for anxiety.
Death reminds us of three anatomical and magical realities:
- Agency lives in the pause. When you move beyond the initial terror of the "void," you find the gifts hidden in the dark.
- Release is a prerequisite for growth. You cannot manifest a new reality while clutching the rotting corpse of an old habit.
- Rebirth requires a eulogy. Sometimes, becoming more of YOU requires a formal goodbye to the versions of yourself you’ve outgrown.
My explicit and active relationship with Death is why I can dance at the edge of chaos and still feel grounded. It’s why, when the world crumbles, I know exactly what to burn and what to bless (ie, the insight to know what you can and can’t control).
Your Next Magical Step
Don't let the "static" of fear disrupt your connection to personal power. Come practice the art of staying whole while things fall apart. Sit at the altar of your own body, feel what wants to die, and give it a holy burial. All in the name of stepping forward in the vision of greatness you have for yourself.
Embodied Magic: Every Friday at 9:00 - 10:30AM Eastern.
Can't make it live? Replays are always available so you can move through your own "Death portals" on your own terms. Sign up here.
With fierce devotion to your evolution,
Mel, The Body Witch
P.S. If that Death/Life imagery called to you, go support the incredible artist at Somnambulant Visuals. Their work is a somatic experience—as haunting and holy as the medicine itself.
