Polyvagal Nerve Theory is "Dead." Long live Body Magic.

Polyvagal Nerve Theory is "Dead." Long live Body Magic.
Scientific "debunking" is actually an invitation to your power.

In the world of somatic coaching, a small empire is currently crumbling.

For years, many of us used Polyvagal Theory to explain why we feel what we feel—mapping safety to the "ventral vagal" and shutdown to the "dorsal." It gave our intellects a nice, neat map. But science has done what it does best: it evolved.
This month, a bombshell paper was published in Clinical Neuropsychiatry (February 2026). In it, 39 world experts in anatomy and physiology reached an unambiguous consensus: the core anatomical and evolutionary claims of Polyvagal Theory are untenable.

Here is the theory’s founding father, Porges’ response.

Science community drama! What a great distraction LOL

Here is why this is actually a celebration:
Science is not a static religion; it’s a process. It sheds its old skin to get closer to the truth. Science is a Death Magician.

The fact that we can’t scientifically link a specific nerve pathway to a "shut down" emotional state doesn’t change one thing about your felt experience. We don’t need a perfectly verified diagram to know that when you breathe into your belly, your heart rate slows. We don’t need a white paper to know that somatic ritual moves your energy from "stuck" to some better state.

The tools I teach in the Witch’s Vault are experiential. Your body is the ultimate laboratory. The data you collect in your bones is more consistent than any framework that can be "debunked."

I'd also like to point out that none of this means that we have wasted our time. We are still learning, and what we don't understand right now can fall into place as we progress. The quest for scientific truth is not linear, and I know we can all relate to the obvious, but sometimes difficult to accept understanding that progress is rarely straightforward.

So continue to practice with confidence and we will continue to alchemize the known and unknown for our greatest healing benefit.
The science might change, but the magic of your skin, your breath, and your choice is permanent.
