The Sovereignty of Self-Soothing

The Sovereignty of Self-Soothing
Griefcraft Underworld

Grief has a "sidecar" called guilt. It’s the poisonous lie that says if you feel joy while your loved ones are dead, you are betraying them. This lie doesn't honor the dead; it only depletes the living. Sovereignty means realizing that your grief does not owe anyone (including the Dead) your perpetual suffering. Choosing to fully live is the highest way to honor those who have crossed over.

The Practice

The Stop: When the "emotional cocktail" of rage and anguish starts to rise, stop. Don't engage with the story in your head. Instead, take a deep breath or shake your body or bounce or do anything you desire to move the energy of that angst out of your body.

  1. The Portal of Agency: Set a timer for two minutes. Breathe consciously—into the belly, out through the mouth. This creates a space between the trigger and your response.
  2. The Reality Check: Ask yourself: "Does my suffering add to their legacy?" The answer is no.
  3. The Integration: Hold your own hands. Affirm: "I am allowed to hold sorrow and sovereignty at the same time."
  4. The Choice: Take one small action that feels like "choosing life"—drink water, look at a plant, or step outside.

Well done, Warrior
