Tiny Ritual Is Still Ritual
Theater and props are fun, but not necessary.
I love my crystal wand. I love my hand-poured candles, my raw plant essences, my cards, and all the gorgeous, high-end witchy accoutrement that fills my altars. I am a New York City bruja after all, so glamour comes with the territory.
But, honestly, none of it is required to make magic or walk as a sovereign witch. In fact, your strongest magic comes forward when your back is against the wall and resources are scant. Moments like those will have you quickly remember that the only tools you really need to survive or transmute are the ones you always carry with you.
Witch Wisdom: All you need to practice real magic is your Breath and your Intention. The Body is the first Temple of Manifestation, so start there.
The theater helps, of course. Humans are sensual creatures; we believe more deeply when our physical senses are actively involved. Think of traditional religious ceremonies with vestments, incense, music and ritual. No different than being sold a story in a Broadway show with costumes, lighting and music. The props are there to trigger your senses and, hopefully, your empathy.
Once your emotions get involved then the world being created becomes REAL.
But the props do not hold the power. You do.
A ritual is only effective when it feels authentic to YOU and your flesh. The time devoted to and elaborate nature of any ritual are not metrics for how effective it will be. If you are forcing yourself to run a complex, multi-tiered ceremony when your battery is at five percent, ask yourself, “Am I actually practicing or am I performing?”
Respect exactly where your capacity sits today. If you long to remain tethered to your practices, but are exhausted, don't make it another horrible thing on your to-do list. The practice should meet you where you are.
Meeting your actual capacity is not laziness.
It banishes the energies of self-abuse and self-abandonment, and creates space for the recharging power of self-compassion. Just sitting honestly with yourself, your desires and your actual capacity honors and strengthens your connection to yourself and your body. This is also a form of self-directed healing, in which you provide an actual safe space for your needs to be honestly expressed and met.
Drop the self-judgment and do the real magic that is available even if it feels...tiny.
A tiny ritual is still a whole ritual:
- Walking intentionally to the subway for five minutes with a clear focus is a spell.
- Putting on one song that really moves you and shaking your body in your bedroom is an exorcism.
- Breathing consciously in a dark room for ninety seconds is a nervous system reclamation.
You know this lesson: quality NOT quantity.
Try this Tiny Ritual now (2-5 mins):
- Sit with yourself in a dark room. The darkness helps to de-stimulate your nervous system. It also eases the transition to reconnecting deeper within the self and your own power.
- Feel your breath move through your body and down into your feet. Drop your tongue to the bottom of your mouth, slacken your jaw and open your throat.
- Invite in healing energy from the Universe/Source/Guides/God/Your Particular Spiritual Jam. Feel or visualize (or both) that energy filling the spaces YOU have just opened.
When you're done, say thank you to whomever came forward to help and give yourself a real hug. Well done, magical being!
If that gave your body even one inch of space, that is the point. Your practice should meet your actual life, not punish you for having one.
Inside the School, we build low-stress ritual containers that honor your real capacity, privacy, energy, and resources.

Estrellita Lab Prompt for the Alchemist Tier:
“Estrellita, I have exactly five minutes of privacy and low energetic capacity today. Help me design a lightweight ritual to clear my space and set an emotional intention using only my breath and one ordinary object in my room. Keep it completely stripped of complex theater.”
Thank you for practicing with me. I write this as my body tells me to stop and take a bath. That is also magic.
Remembering to demonstrate loving myself as I am, so you have a mirror to do the same,
