Grit, Bone, and the Rough Road Home: Why Real Healing Hurts
Have you been told that healing has to look a certain way? Maybe you’ve been told that "healing" is like being in a soft, cushioned room where a gentle voice tells you everything is okay.
I think that could be true, but it’s not the only way healing can happen. Maybe healing has never felt that way for you, and that's why you're here reading this. Maybe you want to know what true healing can look and feel like within yourself. You might even wonder if “healing” is even truly possible.
In the context of the Ancestral Healing work we've been focusing on this month, you can expect the work to feel rough.
Witch Wisdom: Sometimes the healing hurts just as much or more than the wounding.
Why?! Well, for one thing, when you choose to heal yourself in the context of family lineage you will be confronting the personal, historical and collective events/crises/traumas that continue to move through your psyche and physiology.
But remember that there a many ways to approach this work. You are in charge of this process and can choose an avenue and pace that actually benefits your process.
Options:
- If you know your ethnic background, you can look up the history very easily on your own. You can learn a lot about what your own people have gone through when studying the history of human migration throughout the ages. You’ll get a better sense of why and how certain stories and traditions have such stickiness.
- You can try talking to the people around you. Reach out to elders if they are still alive. They may not have all the details, but again, you can get a sense of what it is your people/family have lived through. This can help you increase the skill of empathy.
- If none of this is available to you, do not despair! Sit somewhere quietly and ask for beings of Light, Love, and Wisdom to come through with messaging. Don't get overly analytical here, and see if anyone comes forward identifying themselves as an ancestor. It’s important to practice listening to the voices that show up when silence and solitude are embodied.
Witch Wisdom: Ancestral work is ultimately about accepting yourself as you are and accepting the reality that you will leave behind a legacy, as each of your ancestors has before you. You are not alone. You were never alone. You are connected to and impact others.
Be easy on yourself while exploring and discovering.
I know the value of that first hand.
