My Birthday Battle Cry!

This month, I turn 45. 

The vibe: excited, joyful and grateful.

 Yes, even with the world on fire. 

Yes, I am grateful for everything I have to support myself through the terribly challenging experience of being human, particularly at this timeline. 

But it takes practice to make that state of joyful gratitude authentic. It’s easy to bypass/compartmentalize/suppress/ignore/deny when one's internal world and external world are shifting like a Tower Tarot card on FIRE!

The dominant cultural story wants us to view aging as a slow, quiet decline, especially for women. This narrative machine is designed to make you look at the grey hairs appearing on your head or in your pubes and feel a sudden panic/shame/disgust/embarrassment. It wants you to treat crepey skin on your inner arms or the shifting weight of your belly as a mechanical failure to be reversed, hidden, or resisted at all costs. 

Most people, regardless of gender identity, feel some form of this while watching their temples shift in a way that heralds an eventual return to dust. 

But ask yourself: Who benefits from our negative and self-judging reactions? Well, whoever wants you disconnected from your power. 

How does that make you feel? Knowing there are entities who actively want you to be easier to control?

Here’s hoping it makes you take a pause, slow down and decide how you want to handle that.

Witch Wisdom: Control is an illusion. So influence your experience in a way that benefits you.

An effective response, I find, to that hostile threat is gratitude with teeth.

Let’s specify right now: this is a fierce, self-protective gratitude that roars. It is not an obligatory, toxic positivity “you’re a bad person if you’re not grateful” kind of vibe. It is the refusal to internalize the nasty schmootz from that cultural narrative machine. 

Aging, grey hairs, changing silhouettes, and LIVING in THIS world with real joy for the good that persists is an absolute act of defiance. Choosing deeply joyful gratitude is a way to remain connected to your power and exert influence on your experience.

You may not get to choose your macro circumstances, but you can go through whatever is before you with joy and desire leading you through the dark. 

Phew! Sigh of relief! Deep breath.. Slooooow it down. Feel your power infusing your presence in this very moment by simply digesting the simple truth: There’s always a choice.

As a witch, my relationship with Nature is not a poetic metaphor; it is erotic, elemental, and deeply intimate. She sustains me when I feel the angst of looking in the mirror at my aging and softening face and body. She reminds me of and provides the tools to move towards the choice that lightens my load and allows me to experience joy for all Her colors, animal friends, plant allies... all the wonders. 

Every element I revere in Her, I find mirrored in me, you...all humans. 

Earth is in our bones, water is in our blood, air is in our breath, and fire is in our desire. When I let the wonder of that miracle infuse my every cell, the angst of aging is replaced with calm and happiness. We are all MAGICAL. 

(Little squeal of excitement)

We are all magical, and it's clear that some of us are fully dedicated to using their magic for dark and destructive purposes. I want to age in the bright light of my own positive impact and legacy of goodness. This gives me purpose, ignites my Hope, and fuels me to meet all the challenges that are to come. 

I deserve to chase my dreams and build a world I see fit to thrive in. I want to be part of building that for others, and that's going to take resilience. This is how I source it.
